The shortage of skilled labour in the construction industry is a real cause for concern for businesses owners so there has never been a better time to consider taking on an apprentice or up-skilling your existing staff. It is amazing how quickly new skills can be developed with a bit of tuition and lots of encouragement. I was working with the latest cohort on the PCA apprenticeship last week and bearing in mind that none of this group has a recognised trade the standard of workmanship was very impressive. For all but one member of the cohort, it was the first time they had ever attempted a joinery task and that was after they constructed the honeycombed sleeper walls for the very first time.
We all know that there is a very serious skills shortage but it will not change until the people at the helm take the plunge and seriously consider taking on apprentices.
Having worked with apprentices for the past 5 years I have seen first-hand how beneficial the modest investment has been to those companies who have had the foresight to grow their own talent. Having served an apprenticeship myself as a young lad I have benefitted enormously from the skill that I was taught and they have served me very well throughout my career.
